Started seeding this week and with the very cold weather it is being done all in the house. Not the greatest solution with the mess and taking over the family room, but it will do for a few weeks. I’m planning on setting up a bit of a mini greenhouse inside our hoophouse once it warms up a bit. It will warm up eventually, right? I’ve only seeded onions so far and my plant stand is already full. I need to find some more space in the house somewhere.

Oh yeah… and in the picture above you can see on the left our chick brooder. They will hopefully only be in the house for 2 weeks after which they tend to overstay their welcome. Again, really hoping for warmer weather! Here they are at 4 days. The plan is for these small chicks to be laying by July so that CSA members can buy eggs with their shares. They’ve already grown a lot:

So back to seeding: This year I am attempting not to mix up varieties so that when I plant and harvest I will be able to keep them straight (you should know that I make this resolution every year). This year’s new tools are labels and a good marker. It’s not always easy to do with things like onions which sometimes look the same right up to or even sometimes after harvest. Last year we ate sweet Spanish and cooking onions without ever knowing which was which. This year my varieties are fairly different so that will help. This year we’re growing red and yellow cooking / storage onions, an Italian heirloom; long red (eaten fresh, not stored), shallots and sweet white onions.
